Syria
The country’s Christian population has been forced to abandon its usually colourful and exuberant commemorations because of the number of “martyrs” who have died and the “bad situation.” The whole country is braced for a wave of protests on Friday, despite an announcement that President Bashir al-Assad had signed a decree lifting the 48-year state of emergency, a key demand. Government promises of reform combined with violence by armed plain-clothes security forces have only served to bolster the opposition, who are planning more demonstrations after regular Muslim Friday prayers.

A church bell, not a mosque loudspeaker, calls people to prayer along the dung-lined streets and inside the crumbling houses of this village. The body of Pakistan’s most recent Christian martyr is buried in its graveyard. Khushpur is almost entirely Catholic, and for decades it has been an oasis for Christians in a nation where 95 per cent of people are Muslim and Islamist extremism is spreading. The village has produced so many priests and nuns that some call it the “Rome of Pakistan.” But Islamist militants’ recent murder of federal minister Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian son of the village targeted for opposing Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws, has rattled the peace.

Christians in the small Pakistani town of Gojra are making low-key preparations for Easter this year. Residents of the neighbourhood, known as Christian Colony, in the town in Punjab province, are haunted by memories of a 2009 attack by a Muslim mob in which seven members of a family were killed and dozens of houses torched. The only sign of the approach of Easter was a few young men rehearsing hymns in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. “Fear is there but we cannot give up our religion,” said Wilson Rafiq.

In a square in Nazareth, right below the Basilica of the Annunciation, a Koranic verse warns that “whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers”. Yet it is the spectre of losing in the here-and-now that most haunts the dwindling number of adherents to Christianity in the land of its birthplace. In the hometown of Jesus, where it all began two millennia ago, Christians feel under siege. This fear is not limited to Nazareth or the Holy Land. Across the Arab world, Christians ask whether they are an endangered species: threatened by Islamist radicals; forced by limited opportunities at home to seek new lives abroad; accused of complicity in the schemes of foreign predators; and now menaced by the wave of revolution ripping through the region — which some fear could uncover the submerged hard-wiring of sectarianism.

Abraham left with the men; they turned on him and began to beat him with rods. The minister’s wife, Birtukan, saw the men attack her husband and ran to intervene, but the Muslims beat her as well. Abraham died on the spot and his wife, who sustained a severe head injury, was left unconscious in the street.

    Bill,
Your biography states that you have studied many religious texts, right? Well, I am a christian and I think the Muslim aim of world domination lines up with and is the prophetic fullfillment of the Bible. Jesus, speaking to his disciples, saidthat A time will come when men will kill you and think they are doing God a service. The Bible also says that the nations of the world will rise up and declare war on Israel, and at that time Jesus will return to earth. I think that world domination by the Muslims will happen and it will happen because of liberals and others who support multiculturalism. Only, the liberals think they that are ushering in world peace and brotherhood, a type of heaven on earth. How deceived they are! The Bible is being fulfilled and this false religion and the liberals are the tools for the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. Israel will never be defeated because the land has been promised to them under covenant. The Jews will also rebuild the temple of Solomon on the original site. That means that the Dome of the Rock Mosque will be destroyed.
